What Is Bursitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa — a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction near joints. Acute bursitis can cause sudden pain and swelling around the hip, knee, elbow, or shoulder after overuse, pressure, or trauma.
Symptoms
- Localized joint-area pain
- Swelling or warmth
- Pain with movement or pressure
- Limited use of the affected joint
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your provider examines the area and may use X-ray to evaluate nearby bone and joint structures. Treatment often includes activity modification, ice, medication when appropriate, protective padding or bracing, and referral within CSOG if symptoms persist or another diagnosis is suspected. Sudden redness with fever can suggest infection and needs urgent medical attention.
