Sudden Knee Pain
What Is a Fracture?
A fracture is a break in a bone. Fractures can range from small cracks to displaced breaks and may result from falls, sports, workplace injuries, or direct impact. Prompt orthopaedic assessment helps confirm the diagnosis, protect the injury, and plan healing.
Symptoms
- Pain, swelling, and bruising
- Tenderness over the bone
- Difficulty moving or bearing weight
- Deformity or abnormal position of a limb
- Limited function of the injured area
Diagnosis
Evaluation includes history, physical exam, and X-ray imaging when appropriate. Additional imaging or specialist care may be recommended for complex fractures.
Treatment
Care may include splinting, casting, bracing, pain management, activity restrictions, and coordinated follow-up with a CSOG orthopaedic specialist. Unstable, open, or high-energy injuries may require emergency care.
