Sudden Low Back Pain

What Is Sudden Low Back Pain?

Sudden low back pain is discomfort that begins abruptly in the lumbar region of the spine. It may follow a lift, twist, fall, sports play, or an awkward movement — or appear without a clear event. Muscles, ligaments, discs, joints, and surrounding soft tissues can all be involved. Prompt orthopaedic evaluation helps identify the likely source of pain and guide safe next steps.

What Are the Symptoms of Sudden Low Back Pain?

Symptoms can include:

  • Sharp or aching pain in the lower back
  • Stiffness or limited bending and twisting
  • Muscle spasm
  • Pain that worsens with movement or certain positions
  • Pain that radiates into the buttock or thigh
  • Difficulty standing, walking, or changing positions

Seek emergency care right away for red-flag symptoms such as progressive leg weakness, numbness in the saddle area, or new loss of bowel or bladder control.

What Causes Sudden Low Back Pain?

Common causes evaluated in an orthopaedic setting include:

  • Muscle strain or ligament sprain
  • Disc irritation or herniation
  • Facet joint irritation
  • Sudden overload from lifting or sports
  • Fall or blunt trauma to the back
  • Flare of an underlying spine condition

How Is Sudden Low Back Pain Diagnosed?

Your CSOG Express Care provider will review how symptoms started, examine your spine and neurologic function, and assess strength, flexibility, and walking. On-site X-ray may be used when fracture or alignment concerns are present. Advanced imaging, such as MRI, can be arranged through Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group when soft-tissue detail is needed.

How Is Sudden Low Back Pain Treated?

Treatment is individualized and may include:

  • Activity modification and guided rest, avoiding prolonged bed rest when possible
  • Ice or heat as directed
  • Anti-inflammatory or pain medications when appropriate
  • Bracing or supportive measures in select cases
  • Home exercise guidance
  • Referral to a CSOG spine or orthopaedic specialist, physical therapy, or additional imaging when indicated

Many patients improve with timely conservative care. Your provider will explain warning signs that mean you should return sooner or go to the emergency department.

When Should You Visit CSOG Express Care for Low Back Pain?

Walk-in evaluation may be appropriate if you have sudden back pain after activity or injury, pain that limits work or daily movement, or concern for a musculoskeletal cause without emergency red flags.
